A female college student committed suicide in the capital’s Mirpur area Tuesday night, a day after her lover committed suicide in Malaysia.
Rimi Parvin, a second-year student of social work of Mirpur University College, hanged herself at her brother-in-law Nuruzzaman’s house at Pirerbag around 11:00pm, police said.
Kazi Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station, said they got a letter on the spot. In the letter, Rimi wrote to her sister that she had an affair with Rajib Biswas.
Rimi and Rajib had a talk over the telephone Monday evening. At one stage of their conversation, they engaged into an altercation over their relationship, says the letter. Rajib that day slit his throat with a knife and died.
“I am responsible for Rajib’s suicide, so I am committing suicide”, Rimi wrote in her letter.
Nuruzzaman told The Daily Star, “Rimi and Rajib got into a relationship when Rajib was in Bangladesh. Rajib went to Malaysia for study purpose.”
Quoting family members Kazi Wazed Ali said Rimi’s family pressurised her to discontinue the relationship, as Rajib was a Hindu.
Officer-in-Charge of Narail Sadar Police Station Rafiqul Islam said they have already visited Rajib’s house at Bhabanipur village. Family members of Rajib confirmed his death. His body would be flown back soon.
