Asian Art Biennale
Translating theory into art
Omani artist Hamed Al-Jabri has won the honorable mention award at the 16th Asian Art Biennale for his installation based on the Impasse Theory, a philosophical discourse of intra-psychic collision of a person.
The impressionist Jabri in his installation, Impasse, creates a contrast of two opposing personality traits through two parallel circular mixed-media paintings and a pair of parallel painted fabrics connected to white masks.
Similar mediums and elements have been used in the circular paintings and curtains but the arrangement and the composition are different, showing the contrast.
‘In the installation, I wanted to create puzzles that we see every day. That is why I chose abstraction to show the philosophical theory on human ego,’ Hamed Al-Jabri told New Age.
‘It is a great philosophy that represents interpersonal processes disrupting the work of the professional dyad in promoting self-understanding and development,’ he said.
Hamid Al-Jabri said that his honourable mention award in the Asian Art Biennale in Dhaka is his first international recognition. ‘I’m really happy after winning the award and it will encourage me doing even better,’ he said.
‘I liked the hospitality of the people in Bangladesh and of course I should mention the efficiency of the organiser Shilapakla Academy for holding such a huge art festival covering countries of Asia and pacific regions, he said.
Hamed Aljabri, who obtained his bachelor degree in fine arts from Scientif College of Design in Oman, said that he woks in diverse mediums including drawing and painting,
sculpture, graphic design, digital painting, calligraphy, installation and collage.
‘But, I like installation most as it gives more freedom to an artist. In my artworks I like to address the philosophical issues, human, landscape and heritage,’ he said.
He further said that the art practice in Oman is very rich these days and the artists are producing international standard experimental works.
