Former chief justice M Tofazzul Islam on Thursday called for maintaining transparency and accountability in every sector to materialise the spirit and ideals of the liberation war.
‘We should have maintained accountability and transparency in every field of national life after the liberation war. As we have failed to do so, I think the liberation war has not ended yet,’ he said after launching a book titled ‘Duti Aitihasik Rai’ (two historical judgments) edited by Supreme Court lawyer Manzill Murshid at the Supreme Court Bar Association.
Justice Tofazzul also stressed the need for projecting the actual history of the liberation war before the new generation.
‘Many people had contribution to the war of independence. History will not forgive anybody attempt is made to belittle anyone’s contribution to the liberation war to glorify someone else by distorting history as truth cannot be hidden for long,’ he added.
Chaired by Manzill Murshid, the function was addressed, among others, by Justice M Momtaz Uddin Ahmed, one of the judges who signed the verdicts, historian Muntasir Mamun and former army chief KM Shafiullah. Golam Mostafa, the publisher of the book, also spoke.
The High Court bench of Justice ABM Khairul Haque, now the chief justice and Justice M Momtaz Uddin delivered the historic verdicts on the proclamation of the war of independence and identifying historic sites upon two separate writ petitions, one filed by Muntasir and Shafiullah, and the other by freedom fighter MA Salam.
