Music maestro Sachin Dev Burman (1906 – 1975) was recalled through a discussion and presentation of his songs at a programme at the Music and Dance Centre Auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Tuesday evening. The academy organised the programme where cultural personality and researcher Dr. Karunamoy Goswami was present as chief guest. Noted folk singer Kiran Chandra Roy was also present at the discussion session presided over by Liaquat Ali Lucky, director general of the academy.
The speakers at the programme shared that SD Burman started his music career working as a radio singer on the then Calcutta Radio Station in 1932.
The discussants also informed that Burman had an inclination towards folk and light classical music; as a result, his film compositions were often influenced by his huge repertory of folk-tunes of different genres of traditional music forms such as bhatiali, sari and dhamail.
In the following decade, he reached his peak as a singer and composer.
In 1944, SD Burman moved to Mumbai and composed songs in Hindi films like Shikari and Aath Din. His first major breakthrough came with the film Do Bhai. In 1949, came Shabnam, SD Burman’s biggest hit yet with Filmistan, especially noticeable for its multi-lingual hit song Yeh Duniya Roop Ki Chor which became a rage in those days.
In subsequent years, he became a dominant composer in the ‘classic melody era’ of the Indian filmdom popularly known as Bollywood. SD Burman was the only composer who had used both Kishore and Rafi in almost equal number of songs.
The speakers also shared that the maestro’s Bangla songs such as Shono Go Dokhino Hawa, Tumi Ashechhile Porshu, Ke Jashre and others are still very popular among the music lovers in Bangladesh.
Timeless songs of SD Burman were presented following the discussion session in both chorus and solo renditions.
Artistes of Dhaka Sangskritik Dal presented Jhil Mil Jhil Mil Dhew er Joley and Rangila Rangila Rangila Rey in a chorus.
Abida Raman Setu and Anima Mukti Gomez presented Tumi Jey Giyachho Bokul Bichhano Pothe and Tumi Ar Nei Se Tumi respectively in solo presentation.
The repertory dance group of the academy presented a colourful group dance with Shono Go Dokhina Hawa at the programmme.
