Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Friday said that bigwigs of then Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led government had formulated the blueprint of the August 21 grenade attack.
He came up with the allegation after placing wreaths at the grave of Ivy Rahman at Banani Graveyard marking her eighth death anniversary.
Minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta addressing a discussion meeting marking the death anniversary of Ivy Rahman also held the then prime minister Khaleda Zia responsible for the attack.
Ivy Rahman, the then Women Affairs secretary of AL and wife of President Zillur Rahman, along with others was injured in a grenade attack on an AL rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city on August 21, 2004. She later died at the Combined Military Hospital on August 24.
The Awami League and its front organisations observed the day through different programmes.
President Zillur Rahman, his family members, leaders of the Awami League, cabinet members paid tributes to Ivy Rahman by placing floral wreath at her grave.
The President also visited the graves of the victims of the bloody massacre of August 15 and the three national leaders.
Zillur offered fateha at the graves and prayed to the Almighty for the eternal peace of the departed souls.
A milad and Doa mahfil was also held at Banani graveyard mosque. Leaders of Awami Mohila League and other associate organisations of Awami League attended the programme.
Another milad was held at Bangabhaban on Friday afternoon. President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina attended the milad and special Doa Mahfil where eternal peace was sought for the departed souls of the victims of August 21 grenade attack.
Talking about BNP’s remark of Awami League involvement with the August 21 grenade attack, Hanif said, ‘Those who have come to power through politics of killings can do nothing better but make such remarks.’
State Minister for law, justice and parliamentary affairs Quamrul Islam at a discussion organised by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote at Public Library auditorium said the killers of Bangabandhu and the grenade attackers of August 21 were from the same quarter.
Suranjit at the same programme asked BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to seek apology from the countrymen for the August 21 incident.
Marking the 8th death anniversary of the President’s wife Ivy Rahman, a milad mafil was held at Bangabhaban Friday afternoon.

Cabinet members, Advisers to the Prime Minister, Members of the Parliament, senior leaders of Awami league and its associated organizations and high civil and military officials attended the Milad.
Relatives and family members of the President also attended the milad and doa mahfil.
Special doa was also offered for salvation of the departed souls of late father of the nation Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his slain family members and national four leaders of the country.
Hafez, Karri Moulana Mohammad Abdul Halim conducted the munajat.
