Dhaka stocks inched down on Thursday, the last trading session of the week, but the turnover recorded heavy fall amid fresh unrest on the political front as the Jamaat-e-Islami observed the second day of its 48-hour general strike. The benchmark general index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, DSEX, closed at 4,097.71 points, shedding 0.44 per cent, or 18.45 points.DS30, the blue-chip index of the DSE, lost 0.44 per cent, or 6.69 per cent, to finish at 1,512.43 points.
The turnover of the bourse declined to Tk 485.19 crore from the previous trading session’s Tk 652.97 crore.
Market operators said that fresh unrest on the political front made the retail investors panicky, which led the market to the negative zone.
The market, however, had started the day on a positive note as some state-owned entities were active on the trading floor to keep the market afloat. But, the step failed due to panic-driven sell-offs by the investors, they said.
