Twitter held an event today where they announced an upcoming change to the popular social media website, including visual changes as well as embedded media content.
Twitter, the popular microblogging site, has been a trending topic on its own service lately over a highly anticipated announcement. Twitter employees have been extremely excited over the past few days, and now we know why.
Twitter announced a relaunch of the popular social media website with a new layout that very much mirrors the service’s recently launched iPad app. The left column provides the user stream while the right column provides other information. The search field, site navigation, and settings area have been moved to a new header area towards the top of the page. Overall, the new Twitter layout is cleaner, simpler, and easier to use.
The biggest addition to the service, however, is not the visual change. It is the addition of embedded content from services like YouTube, Plixi, TwitPic, TwitVid, and Twitter’s own location service. Depending on the link contained within a particular tweet, the content (video, picture, live stream, etc.) will open in-line on the right side of the web interface, much like the official Twitter iPad app. Currently, sixteen media providers are signed up with Twitter for this type of integration, including video portals like YouTube, Vimeo, and Ustream, as well as popular picture services.
