Police fired blank shots to disperse a violent rock throwing mob, who set roadblocks felling trees and burning tyres, protesting the death of a motorcyclist, knocked down by a police van at Talaimari crossing in the city on Monday night. Sohel Rana, 35, son of late Moksed Ali of Kedurmor area of the city was injured when his bike was hit by a rashly driven police pick up van at around 10.00pm, leaving him seriously injured, witnesses said.
Locals recovered Sohel and rushed him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor pronounced him dead.
Locals agitated by his death set fire on tires and barricaded by felling trees on the old Rajshahi-Natore highway. They also damaged several vehicles throwing stones.
However, police rushed to the spot and doused the fire and cleared the road by removing the barricade,opening blank shots when they come under brick batting by the mob, Asish Kumar Ghosh, Officer-in-charge of Motihar thana said.
On the other hand, a man was killed in another road accident at Sultanganj atea under Paba thana of the district on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Siraj, 55 of Devnagar area of Chapainawabganj district.
Abu Mokaddam Ali, Officer-in-charge of Paba thana said, the accident took place at around at 11.00 am when a Rajshahi-bound speedy passenger bus hit Siraj from back side when he was crossing the road killing him on the spot.
An Unnatural Dead case has been filed under Paba thana in this connection, OC added.
