Visiting Bangladesh Under-19 side are on knife-edge to face a humiliating defeat at the hands of England Under-19 team in the first four-dayer match of the tour at North Marine Road Ground in Scarborough on Wednesday.
After facing follow-on, they scored 143 for three on the third day till filing of this report. The Bangladeshi youngsters still need to score 189 runs to make the English side bat on in the second innings with just seven wickets remaining.
Bangladesh’s nightmarish style batting continued in their second innings also as they lost two early wickets leaving the scoreboard just five runs. Like the first innings, opener Amit Mojumder once again failed to give the side a solid start when he was dismissed for just four runs. One-down batsman Asif Hossain soon followed him with naught.
Another opener Saikat Ali and Mominul Haque then consolidated with 101 runs partnership for the third wicket stand but English younger took the control again having scalped Saikat Ali who smacked a brilliant 58. On the other hand Mominul Haque, who topscored the side in the first innings with 90, was batting on 60 runs alongside Anamul Haque (17*).
Earlier, Bangladesh U-19 were dismissed for 270 runs in their first innings and was forced to follow-on. England Under-19 side riding on Joshua Cobb’s double-century amassed a gigantic 502 runs before being all out in their first innings.
Bangladesh needed a dazzling start to but English pacer Christopher Wood struck an early blow in Bangladesh’s reply, dismissing the opener Amit Majumder for 2. Bangladesh slipped further, losing Asif Ahmed and Saikat Ali after they had got starts, and were struggling at 89 for 3. They needed a substantial partnership and it was provided to them by Mominul and Anamul Haque who added 97 for the fourth wicket.
Bangladesh’s recovery, though, was broken by Nathan Buck’s double-strike. He dismissed both the set batsmen, Anamul for 31 and Mominul for 90 in the space of nine runs. Bangladesh were 195 for 5 and lost wickets regularly thereafter. Sabbir then fought hard to keep the side on track but the lower order just failed to support him as the certain follow-on came insight. Sabbir by then remained unbeaten on 52.
Scott Borthwick cut through the line-up, picking up five for 66 as the visitors had to negotiate the follow-on battle after wrapping up for 270.
