Responding to a University Grants Commission request, the teachers of 56 Universities have expressed interest to provide specialised training to build 10,000 IT/software graduates under a government project. While attending a function organised by UGC last week in Dhaka, 104 teachers of Computer Science, Computer Science and Engineering departments and Institute of Information and Technology of 34 public and 22 private universities appreciated initiatives of the Leveraging ICT for Growth, Employment and Governance project under the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, officials said.
They said the World Bank is providing $ 70 million credit for implementing the leveraging ICT project that started journey from January this year.
The LICT project contains three types of training for building 34,000 IT professionals and Top-Up IT (specialized training for building 10,000 IT/software graduates) training is one that would create 10,000 IT services professionals.
LICT project director Md Rezaul Karim said the teachers have put forward a recommendation to the ICT ministry saying that the opinion of the teachers should be incorporated in the curriculum and manual of training to be prepared by international consultancy firm in collaboration with reputed university like Carnegie Mellon.
Earlier, UGC chairman AK Azad Chowdhury in a letter had requested the vice-chancellors of the universities to send teachers of CS and CSE departments and IIT of their respective university and IIT to attend a day-long workshop held on November 16, 2013.
‘We got huge response from the teachers of public and private universities and they are interested to build 10,000 IT/software graduates by providing them international standard training,’ Karim said adding they will give Top-Up IT training using their computer lab facilities with a period of six to nine months training.
Deputy project director Tarique M Barkatullah said the training curriculum will be made as per IT and ITES industries demand and the trainees will be selected through competitive recruitment process.
If implemented the project is expected to create 34,000 direct and 1,20,000 indirect jobs in the country, he said.
Sources said LICT project of Bangladesh Computer Council has started the process to appoint foreign consulting firm which, in collaboration with reputed universities of the world will prepare the curriculum and manual for making the Top-Up IT training world class one.
