Housing and Public Works Secretary Khondker Shawkat Hossain on Friday said unplanned urbanization had risen in country due to lack of proper decentralization after independence. Proper decentralization has not been made due to lack of coordination among planners, said the secretary at a programme on the eve of Town Planning Day in the city organized by Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP). Among others, RAJUK chairman Eng. Md Nurul Huda, BIP general secretary Khandokar M Ansar Hossain, Prof Sarwar Jahan of BUET spoke at the function presided over by Prof Dr Golam Rahman, president of BIP. The secretary also said that the planners are not united, which is another reason for poor and unplanned urban planning. Referring to the Bangabandhu Local Government Plan, he said if the plan had been properly implemented the power of district Commissioners would not have decreased. Eng. Md Nurul Huda presented a proposal to form a final plan from Planning Commission present a final plan for town and urban development for proper urbanization.
If we look at the condition of Dhaka city, we can understand that everything has gone wrong, said BIP general secretary Khandokar M Ansar Hossain.
With the population expected to go up in the coming years, pressure on land will increase which needs to be addressed urgently, Prof Sarwar Jahan of BUET said.
