The prices of onion, green chilli and most of the other vegetables went up on the capital’s retail markets on disruption of supply chain due to a 60-hour general strike called by main opposition alliance, said traders. The prices of onion increased by Tk 20-Tk 30 a kg in the last two days, the first two days of the strike, and was selling at Tk 110-Tk 120 a kg while the imported item was selling at Tk 100-Tk 105 a kg on Monday.
Zahidul Islam, a retailer at Rampura kitchen market, told New Age that the prices of onion had decreased a bit after Eid-ul-Azha and was selling at Tk 90-Tk 100 a kg.
‘But the prices of the item witnessed further rise on the wholesale market as hartal interrupted supply chain,’ he said.
Zahidul said that the wholesale prices of onion reached at Tk 92-Tk 98 a kg at Shyambazar, the largest wholesale market in the city, on Monday due to supply shortage.
The price of green chilli varied on different markets in the city though traders claimed that the disruption of supply chain due to hartal pushed up the price of the item.
Green chilli was being sold at Tk 100 a kg at Karwan Bazar and Rampura kitchen market while the item was being sold at Tk 120 a kg and Tk 140 a kg at Hatiopool kitchen market and the Banasree area respectively.
The prices of vegetables increased by Tk 5-Tk 10 a kg on the day.
Aubergine was selling at Tk 60 a kg, okra at Tk 60 a kg, bitter gourd at Tk 60 a kg and papaya at Tk 25 a kg on the day.
Cauliflower and cabbage were selling at Tk 40 a piece and a medium-sized gourd was selling at Tk 80 a piece on the city’s kitchen markets.
