More than nine crore people will live in the country’s urban areas by 2030, said state minister for local government and engineering department Jahangir Kabir Nanak on Wednesday.
‘At present, around five crore people live in the country’s urban areas. Urban population is increasing rapidly with the rising economic growth and it is presumed that over nine crore people will live in the country’s urban areas by 2030,’ he said at a meeting at the LGED Bhaban in the capital.
City Urban Development Project under the local government division organised the meeting on the occasion of handing over cars to nine municipalities.
Nanak handed over the car keys to the mayors of nine municipalities – Sonargaon, Kanchan, Kaliakoir, Manikganj, Singair, Tarabo, Mongla Port, Jhikargachha and Jessore.
Speaking on the occasion, Nanak said the country’s agriculture-based economy will shift one day to industry-based economy.
So, proper urbanisation is essential in such economic transformation.
He said the country’s cities and urban centres would have to be built in a planned manner like the developed countries.
The state minister for LGRD said the government believes in development and its political instruction is to strengthen democracy through development.
‘We work for the people’s welfare. Our main election pledge was to fulfil the aspiration of the people,’ he said.
Local government division secretary Abu Alam M Shahid Khan, LGED chief engineer M Wahidur Rahman and CRDP project director Ahsan Habib also spoke at the meeting.
