US entrepreneurs are keen to invest in Bangladesh’s energy, pharmaceuticals and information sectors, visiting US economic and business affairs
assistant secretary Jose Fernandez said on Monday.
He said this when a 30-member US trade delegation met commerce minister GM Quader at his office reports UNB.
‘Bangladesh is on her way to becoming a middle-income country. The trade volume between the US and Bangladesh have doubled in the last decade. However, the image of the country has been tarnished due to a number of incidents where human and labour rights have been violated,’ said Jose.
The minister told the delegation that Bangladesh also exported leather products, ships, pharmaceuticals, agricultural products and ceramics and there were huge demands for Bangladeshi products across the globe.
An investment-friendly environment exists in the country and the government has been offering adequate facilities to
the foreign investors, he said.
Replying to a question from the media after the meeting, the minister said he had informed the US delegation that the recent building collapse at Savar was an accident after which the government took immediate steps to rehabilitate the affected workers and stop recurrence of such incident.
Asked whether Ticfa and GSP came up for discussion at the meeting, the minister answered in the negative.
