Prices of vegetables and broiler increased on the retail markets in the capital over the week ending Friday due to supply shortage as inclement weather caused by depression disrupted supply chain.
The prices of most of the vegetables increased by Tk 5-Tk10 a kg over the week.
Traders said the kitchen markets saw a supply shortage as the road and river communications were seriously interrupted across the country due to rough weather.
Aubergine was retailing at Tk 40-Tk 50 a kg, cucumber at Tk 35 a kg, tomato at Tk 35 a kg, papaya at Tk 40 a kg, okra at Tk 40 a kg and bitter gourd at Tk 40 a kg over the week ending Friday.
The price of green chilli remained unchanged and was selling at Tk 50-Tk 60 a kg on the day.
The price of broiler increased by Tk 10 a kg and was selling at Tk 150-Tk 160 a kg on Friday.
Abul Kashem, a retired banker who came to Rampura kitchen market, told New Age that the prices of most of the vegetables increased by Tk 10 a kg compared with that of the last week.
Though the retailers are saying that supply chain has been disrupted due to bad weather, this excuse is not fully acceptable as the supply of vegetables remain satisfactory, he observed.
Kashem, however, said there was a supply shortage of fish on the market but the prices remained unchanged.
Rohita was selling at Tk 250-Tk 320 a kg, katla at Tk 220-Tk 300 a kg, pangas at Tk 140-Tk 250 a kg and tilapia at Tk 140-Tk 160 a kg depending on their size and quality.
The prices of beef and mutton remained unchanged. Beef was selling at Tk 280-Tk 300 a kg and mutton at Tk 425-Tk 450 a kg on Friday.
Both unpacked soya bean and super palm oil prices remained unchanged and the commodities were retailing at Tk 120 a kg and Tk 82 a kg respectively on the day.
The price of bottled soya bean oil (five litres) remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 655 to Tk 665 on the city’s kitchen markets.
The prices of garlic and ginger remained unchanged and were retailing at Tk 90 a kg and Tk 120 a kg respectively.
The prices of imported garlic and ginger decreased by Tk 10 a kg and were selling at Tk 100 a kg and Tk 90 a kg respectively on the day.
The price of onion remained unchanged and was selling at Tk 35 a kg while the imported onion was selling at Tk 30 a kg on Friday.
The price of all varieties of red lentil remained high and the red lentil imported from Turkey and Canada was selling at Tk 85-Tk 90 a kg over the week.
The price of fine variety of red lentil named ‘kangaroo’ was selling at Tk 130 a kg on Friday while the local variety of red lentil was selling at Tk 115 a kg.
The price of egg remained unchanged and it was retailing at Tk 33-Tk 34 a hali (four pieces) on the city’s retail markets.
The price of sugar remained steady and the commodity was selling at Tk 48 a kg on the day.
The newly-harvested miniket and najirshail rice were selling at Tk 42 a kg and Tk 44 a kg respectively while the old varieties were selling at Tk 46 a kg and Tk 48 a kg respectively on the day.
