The prices of daily essentials including vegetables, fish and meat went up in the city’s kitchen markets due to a supply shortage after Eid-ul-Fitr, a religious festival for Muslims.
Traders said that customers’ turnout at the kitchen markets was thin after the festival celebrated on Tuesday but at the same time market witnessed an acute supply shortage of essential commodities.
The prices of most of the vegetables increased by Tk 10 a kilogram while the price of green chilli almost doubled to Tk 160-Tk 200 a kg after the Eid.
The prices of aubergine and tomato, however, decreased by Tk 20 over the week.
Aubergine was selling at Tk 60 a kg, tomato at Tk 100 a kg, cucumber at Tk 40-Tk 50 a kg, papaya at Tk 40 a kg, okra at Tk 50 a kg and bitter gourd at Tk 60-Tk 70 a kg in the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.
Onion price increased by Tk 5 a kg and the item was selling at Tk 40-Tk 45 a kg on the day.
Ashikur Rahman, a trader at the Rampura kitchen market, told New Age that the prices of vegetables went up due to a supply shortage as many traders were still enjoying Eid vacation.
He said the supply situation would be normal within two to three days and the prices of vegetables might come down.
The prices of fish increased by Tk 20-Tk 30 a kg in the city’s kitchen markets.
Rohita was selling at Tk 300-Tk 350 a kg, katla at Tk 280-Tk 350 a kg, pangas at Tk 150-Tk 200 a kg and tilapia at Tk 150-Tk 180 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
Narayan Chandra Barman, a trader at the Shantinagar kitchen market, said that new consignment of fish was yet to come in the city after Eid.
The prices of broiler, beef and mutton increased by Tk 10-Tk 20 a kg and the items were selling at Tk 160-Tk 170 a kg, Tk 300 a kg and Tk 460-Tk 480 a kg respectively on Friday.
The prices of unpacked soya bean and super palm oil remained unchanged and the items were retailing at Tk 112 a kg and Tk 83 a kg respectively.
The price of bottled soya bean oil (five litres) remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 540 to Tk 560 in the city’s kitchen markets.
Ginger price remained unchanged and the commodity was retailing at Tk 200-Tk 240 a kg.
Red lentil imported from Turkey and Canada was selling at Tk 85-Tk 90 a kg over the week.
The fine variety of red lentil was selling at Tk 130 a kg on Friday while its local variety was selling at Tk 115 a kg.
Egg price increased by Tk 4 a hali (four pieces) and the item was selling at Tk 32 a hali in the city.
Garlic price remained unchanged and the local garlic was selling at Tk 90 a kg while the imported one was retailing at Tk 100 a kg.
Potato was selling at Tk 24-Tk 26 a kg over the week.
The price of sugar remained stable and the item was selling at Tk 48-Tk 52 a kg on Friday.
The fine varieties of miniket were selling at Tk 48-Tk 50 a kg while the coarse varieties were retailing at Tk 44-Tk 46 a kg.
The fine varieties of BR-28 were selling at Tk 42-Tk 44 a kg and the coarse varieties of parija were selling at Tk 38-Tk 40 a kg.
