Two mayoral candidates in the Sylhet City Corporation polls have engaged in a verbal war over how the city will be developed as they hit the streets to campaign for the upcoming polls.
Awami League-led grand alliance-backed candidate Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran (last mayor) claims Sylhet city saw Tk 5 billion development in the past five years while the BNP-led 18-party alliance-sponsored Ariful Haque Chowdhury rubbishes such claim.
Chowdhury claims Kamran could not match the development works carried out during the past BNP-rule while Kamran shot back accusing BNP of indulging in plundering in the name of development.
Kamran says he spent Tk 110 million for canals and drainage to mitigate, what he said, was the city’s biggest problem, water logging. ‘Now the problem is not as big as it was before’.
He further claims that a Tk 1.1 billion water refinery plant is awaiting inauguration. The plant will eliminate the problem of drinking water, he pledges.
On the other hand, Chowdhury says Kamran failed to maintain whatever works were done during his tenure. He is highlighting his achievements in roadways modification and city beautification works like Surma river bank development and installation of fountains.
The Sylhet City Corporation elections are slated to be held on Jun 15.
