The usually phlegmatic Daniel Vettori was disappointed with New Zealand’s 9-run loss to Bangladesh in the first one-day at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.
Speaking in the post-match press conference, the Black Caps skipper admitted that the 210 runs from 37 overs should have been chased down.
“Any loss is disappointing but we should have chased the score, but we lost wickets at regular intervals and at crucial times,” said Vettori.
The 31-year-old all-rounder however thought his team were a bit unlucky with the revised target after the rain stopped play for nearly an hour.
“Duckworth/Lewis didn’t help us. All our Powerplays were gone by then and the target was reduced by just 19 (sic) runs, but still it shouldn’t have made any difference,” he said.
Vettori nevertheless was all praise for Shakib Al Hasan, who took four wickets and struck a quickfire 58 to pick up the man-of-the-match award.
“Shakib played very well. His batting late in the innings gave them the
impetus and his bowling posed a danger,” he said.
Despite going down 1-0, Vettori said that he is looking forward to the next game and not thinking of any pressure.
“We are looking forward to the next match and not thinking about anything else,” he said.
