The Bangladesh Police is going to launch a victim support centre, the first-ever of the kind, to provide moral and legal support for the repressed women and children.
The home minister, Sahara Khatun, is expected to inaugurate the centre on February 17.
The centre, headed by assistant commissioner Shamima Parveen, will be housed in the Tejgaon police station.
Twelve women members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police — one inspector, three subinspectors, three assistant subinspectors and the remaining ones constables — will be posted to the centre. All are now being trained in running the centre.
Shamima said she would discharge her duties with utmost sincerity so that victims could get back to their normal life.
A physician will be on duty at the centre round-the-clock.
Ten leading non-governmental organisations will also be engaged in running the centre, sources said.
The centre will accommodate eight victims at a time and a victim can stay there up to five days. Each of the victims will be provided with all legal and medical supports and counselling to overcome the situation.
The support centre will be part of the ongoing police reforms programme and it is set up as a pilot project.
The project activities will be expanded on achievement of the centre, said additional inspector general of police NBK Tripura, also the national programme director of the police reforms programme.
