Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the acting secretary general of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has said the people would certainly achieve victory in the ongoing movement to restore democracy in the country. The BNP leader said this to reporters after placing floral wreathes at the National Mausoleum at Savar on the occasion of the Victory Day. Fakhrul said the countrymen have been carrying out the movement to protect the voting rights of the people. “Country’s democracy has now become confined. People will rescue it through intensifying the movement under the leadership of Khaleda Zia,” he added.
Earlier, the BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia paid tribute to the great sons of the soil, who made supreme sacrifices during the War of Liberation in 1971.
The BNP chairperson flanked by her party senior leaders placed wreaths at the National Mausoleum around 8:10am. Senior party leaders including Fakhrul Islam Alamgir were present on the occasion.
The opposition leader also observed one-minute silence to show her respects to the memories of martyrs of the liberation war. She left the National Monument area at about 8:35am. Later, Khaleda Zia visited the mazar of former president Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, and placed floral wreathes at the grave of the BNP founder at 9:15 am.
BNP standing committee members— Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Abdul Moin Khan, vice chairman Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, BNP chairperson’s adviser Osman Faruk, Barrister Shajahan Omar, Major (Retd) Ruhul Amin Chowdhury, Abdul Salam and other leaders of the BNP and its front organisations accompanied the BNP chairperson.
