Walton Victory Day hockey tournament will begin on Saturday at the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium, announced by the Bangladesh Hockey Federation on Thursday.
Four premier league clubs – Abahani Limited, Usha Krira Chakra, Ajax Sporting Club and Azad Sporting Club –will take part the meet along with three services teams –Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Air Force and Bangladesh Police.
Three premier league clubs – Bangladesh Sporting Club, Sonali Bank and Dhaka Wanderers Club – are not participating in the tournament citing a lack of preparation and the county’s political situation, said a BHF official.
The seven teams splitting into two groups will play the group games on league basis. Two-time champions Abahani, Bangladesh Army
and Ajax SC have been placed in Group A, while Group B is made up of Usha, Bangladesh Air Force, Azad SC and Bangladesh Police. The two top teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
Title sponsor Walton will provide Tk 2.80 lakh to organise the 10-day long tournament.
The champion team will receive Tk 25,000 and runners-up will get Tk 15,000 as prize money, while all seven teams will be given Tk 5,000 each as participation money.
