BSS, Bogra
BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia yesterday urged the people to vote for `sheaf of paddy’ in the December 29 elections to restore democracy and safeguard the country’s independence and sovereignty.
“The sheaf of paddy is not only a poll symbol, it is the symbol of development, independence and sovereignty,” she told a huge election rally at Majhira High School ground.
Thousands of people from different walks of life greeted Begum Zia chanting slogans and waving banners, festoons, placards and BNP’s poll symbol `sheaf of paddy’ when she arrived at the meeting venue at around 1:45 pm. The BNP chief herself is a candidate from this constituency in the forthcoming election.
Earlier, Begum Zia addressed another big election rally at Sherpur in support of BNP candidate Jane Alam Khoka.
She left Dhaka for Bogra on a two-day election tour to northern districts by road at 10:30 am and addressed wayside rallies in support of party candidate Lutfar Rahman Khan Azad at Alenga in Tangail, for Rumana Mahmud at Soyedabad in Sirajganj, for M Akbar Ali at Shalonga in Sirajganj, and for Abdul Mannan at Chandaikona in Sirajganj.
Addressing the election rallies, Begum Zia urged the people to take the right decision in the forthcoming election. The December 29 election is very important for the nation, she said and added that the country needs an elected government to solve the existing problems.
The country will not attain economic prosperity and there will be no foreign investment in the absence of an elected government, she said. She said a particular party foiled the January 22, 2007 election sensing its defeat. “This party is now dreaming to go to power,” she said and added that “there will be no development, rather the people will have to face the same situation of the famine in 1974, if this party comes to power.”
Begum Zia said, if voted to power, her government will take steps to increase production and create employment for the youth.
