CONSTITUENCY DHAKA 16
Voters optimistic about electing capable candidate
Obaidul Ghani
People of the Dhaka 16 constituency are optimistic about electing a capable candidate in the forthcoming national polls for the constituency to make the area drug- and violence-free.
The women and the new voters are also very keen to cast their votes to elect a capable candidate who will be able to contain these crimes, giving a patient hearing to their words.
‘We prefer an easy-going candidate who will be able to provide us with social security and solve our problems’, said Mrs Anwara Begum, a housewife of Mirpur, under ward no-5, on Sunday.
The 60-year-old woman, however, expressed her grievance saying that some miscreants backed by the BNP had confined her son to take away about Tk 20,000 as bribe during the regime of the BNP-led four-party alliance government.
With about 3,00,833 registered voters, the constituency includes Dhaka City Corporation ward no 2, 3, 5 and 6, Mirpur section 10, 11 and 7, a part of section 6, Pallabi, Eastern Housing, Dowari Para Nawab Faizunnesa Wakf Estate, Arambagh and Arifabad.
The seven candidates contesting the polls for this constituency are Alhaz Iliash Uddin Mollah from the Awami League-led alliance, barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia from the BNP-led four-party alliance, Kazi Faruque Ahmed from Oikyabadya Nagorik Andolon, Abdul Mannan Aziz from Islami Andolon Bangladesh, Mir Mosharraf Chowdhury from Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, Mahfuzur Rahman from Bikalpa Dara Bangladesh and Nazibul Basher Maizvandary from Bangladesh Tariquat Federation.
Most of the voters said the front-runner candidates in the polling race are Ilius Uddin Mollah from the AL and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia from the BNP.
Some 10,000 stranded Pakistanis have been enlisted as voters throughout the country, local sources said. Some of them were seen working for different party candidates.
A new voter staying at a relief camp for the stranded Pakistanis at Mirpur section-11, Kium Uddin Siddiqui said, ‘We are happy to get enlisted as voters and we will exercise our franchise to cast votes for a suitable candidate who will come forward to solve our long-standing rehabilitation problems.’
‘Now we are compelled to live in a tiny house along with some 7-14 families in an unhygienic condition,’ he said, adding that the immediate past government had suspended their relief aid programmes.
Talking to New Age, on Sunday, the candidate Alhaz Ilius Uddin Mollah said, ‘I will try to eliminate violence and drug-trade from the constituency if I am elected.’ The AL has a plan to introduce rationing facilities for the low-income group people, he added.
‘I also have a plan to develop the roads at the constituency if I am voted to power’, said the candidate.
