22-point action plan drawn as parties, institutions, student bodies agree

Leaders of different political parties, heads of educational institutions and student organisation of Rajshahi at a meeting yesterday agreed to abide by a 22-point action policy to keep educational institutions in Rajshahi city free from student unrest and criminal activities.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton organized the coordination meeting at Rajshahi Circuit House auditorium with Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Hafizur Rahman Bhuiyan in the chair.
The 22-point action policy has made it obligatory to take permission from the institution head before holding procession and meeting.
The action policy prohibits all types of political activities in mosques, carrying sticks and arms during procession, prohibition on all types of procession, meeting and political activities at students’ dormitories, using banners, posters and festoons of political organisations in educational institutions, showdown and political activities after evening on the campus, entry of outsiders and non-students at students’ halls.
According to the action policy, students seats at residential halls will be allotted according to merit and seniority, heads of educational institutions will form students union rules and regulations, students organisation leaders will take steps to settle if any untoward situation arises and they will not shelter criminals, extortionists, arms cadres and expelled leaders.
Students leaders will cooperate with police for checking criminal activities in the institutions and refrain from lobbying for release of any criminal and outsider,
Teachers and student leaders of institutions will solve their own problems and only students will be involved in student politics.
RCC Mayor Liton, who read out the 22-point action policy for establishing smooth educational environment and arranging peaceful coexistence of students belonging to all organisations, said stern action will be taken if any organisation violates the action policy.
A monitoring committee headed by RCC Mayor Liton was also formed for implementing and monitoring the policy.
Other members of the committee are Workers Party lawmaker Fazle Hossain Badsha, Police Commissioner Muhammad Mahbub Mohsin, former mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu, vice chancellors of Rajshahi University and Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet), district BNP President Azizur Rahman and Jatiya Party leader Durul Huda.
Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Shefaul Karim, Ruet syndicate member Sayed Abdul Mafiz, RU Assistant Proctor Abdul Haque, Rajshahi Medical College Principal Dr Towhidul Islam, Rajshahi College Principal Dr Abdul Mazid, New Government Degree College Principal Dr Farida Sultana, Mother Bux Home Economics College Principal Salma Shahadat, City College Principal Dr Shajahan Karim, city Awami League Vice President Rafik Uddin, Rajshahi Jamaat Amir Ataur Rahman, heads of different educational institutions and leaders of different political and student organisations were present at the meeting.
All the participants extended their support and vowed to implement and maintain the policy for establishing a congenial educational atmosphere at all educational institutions in Rajshahi.
Earlier political leaders and heads of educational institutions and senior teachers held a meeting to discuss way out to stave off student unrest and political violence in different institutions in Rajshahi, that sparked especially after the December 29 parliamentary election.
Former RCC mayor advocate Abdul Hadi, also former lawmaker, termed the action policy as a ‘noteworthy and exceptional model’ for educational institutions in Bangladesh.
