Western Marine Shipyard has recently received environment and occupational health and safety certificates from the French classification company,
Bureau Veritas, the shipbuilder said in a statement yesterday.
Western Marine is the first shipyard in Bangladesh to receive the certification that endorses their integrated management system.
Benard Anne, managing director of Bureau Veritas, presented the certificates to Sakhawat Hossain, managing director of Western Marine, and Arifur Rahman Khan,
technical director, at a maritime exhibition, SMM 2012, at Hamburg in Germany in early September.
Western Marine was an exhibitor this year at the largest biannual maritime exhibition.
The shipyard also signed a contract with a German classification society, Germanischer Lloyd (GL), for certifying the 100th keel of the shipyard.
GL will supervise Wetern Marine’s construction of a 60-tonne BP tug boat for the Chittagong port fleet as their highest capacity tug.
The shipbuider has become widely known in the European market from export of eight ice-class ships to a German ship owner, Grona Shipping. The 5200DWT capacity ships
ply the Baltic Sea.
The company will deliver a 50m RoPax ferry to Hundested-Roervig Faergefart, a Danish company, very soon.
