Former Bangladesh cricket team coach Dav Whatmore arrived in Dhaka to commentate in the ongoing series against Zimbabwe which starts today in Dhaka.
Whatmore said he was excited at the prospect of watching his old team and looked forward to reunite with some of his friends at the Bangladesh Cricket Board, where he worked from 2003 to 2007, guiding the national team with reasonable success.
The Sri Lankan-born Australian joined the Tiger’s practise at the National Cricket Academy at Mirpur to get some early knowledge, before taking up the microphone.
Whatmore told reporters at Mirpur that he was ready to share his experience with any cricketer during his stay in Bangladesh, outside of his primary responsibility at the commentary box.
‘I will help anybody,’ Whatmore told reporters at Mirpur. ‘He doesn’t have to be just from the team [national], and I will assist anybody in any possible way,’ said Whatmore.
‘I have been looking forward to re-acquainting with so many people,’ he said.
Whatmore had reasonable success as national cricket team’s head coach, guiding them to their first Test match victory against Zimbabwe in 2005, and followed that with success against other teams in one-day internationals.
He left Bangladesh after the World Cup 2007 when Bangladesh reached the super-eight phase.
‘I am looking forward to a good series against Zimbabwe – the old enemy,’ said Whatmore.
‘I remember the first Test win (Chittagong),’ he said. ‘But the one after was even better when we drew, because we had to bat a long time – four and a half sessions – in the fourth innings, to ensure a series win.’
Whatmore is currently working for the ICC to help Afghanistan, Ireland, Scotland and UAE prepare for ICC World Cup, as part of its high performance programme.
