Many countries have already partially turned their backs on TikTok, with the Chinese social network being banned in several states at the government level over fears of possible leaks and data theft.
These countries will no longer allow official government-linked phones to have the app downloaded, even if no bans are in place to stop the general public from using the app. At least not yet.
“On the advice of our cyber security experts, the parliamentary service has informed members and staff that the TikTok application will be removed from all devices with access to the parliamentary network,” is the explanation given by multiple governments.
Although TikTok has long insisted that it does not share data with the Chinese government, the fear that it is just an information-gathering strategy still very much exists. Even countries such as the United States are considering a total shutdown.
Which countries have partially or fully banned TikTok?
New Zealand: This latest country to join the list. They say that the app cannot be installed on the smartphones of legislators from next April, as “the risks” that the data collected by TikTok will be used by the Chinese government “are not acceptable”.
United Kingdom: Earlier this week, the UK government decided to put an end to TikTok within its own government. UK Cabinet Office minister Oliver Dowden stressed that the decision is effective immediately.
United States: The White House was one of the first countries to go against TikTok. In fact, it demanded its sale in order to allow the app to remain active on its territory.
Canada: Following its neighbour’s decision, the Canadian government explained that TikTok “presents an unacceptable risk to privacy and security”.
European Union: The European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of the EU agreed on a similar decision, that was effective immediate and controversial.
Other countries: There are a few other countries with some TikTok bans in place too, such as Taiwan, Afghanistan, India and Pakistan.
