Visually impaired people urged the government on Saturday to ensure safe outdoor movement of white cane users.
They also urged the government to sensitise the officials of communication ministry, other concerned departments and the law enforcement agencies about safe outdoor movement of white cane users.
The society demanded for making roads, footpaths, zebra crossings and foot over bridges user-friendly for the people with disabilities.
They also called for the introduction of audio warning system in the traffic signals.
They demanded for holding a correct census of people with disabilities using scientific methodology.
They demanded separate budgetary allocation and development planning for the people with disabilities based on the census data.
They asked the authorities to launch a campaign to create awareness about safe movement of the visually impaired using the white cane.
They also suggested for providing training to the visually impaired on how to use the white cane for safe movement on roads.
They called for the formulation of a clear government policy to ensure driving training to facilitate safe movement of people with disabilities, said a press release of Bangladesh Visually Impaired People’s Society.
Speaking at a discussion hosted by BVIPS at the Sufia Kamal Auditorium of the National Museum to mark the White Cane Safety Day, they called for putting in place a fool proof system for the safe movement of the visually and other impaired persons.
The attorney general Mahbub-e Alam attended as the chief guest.
Among others, Jawaherul Islam Mamun, secretary general of the National Forum of Organisations Working with the Disabled and Mohammad Jahangir Alam general secretary of BVIPS were present.
