Telecommunication system of Bangladesh Railway is being upgraded to fibre optic system from the existing copper-cable based telephony, which would facilitate modern telecommunication for railway by incorporating wireless device.
The modern system would also enable the BR to improve its train operation through better communication.
Grameenphone, a cellular phone operator in the country, introduced the modern telecommunication solution named ‘m-Centrex’ for BR that ensures mobility and business efficiency with high system availability under GSM platform.
Under the system, the existing fixed-line exchange functionalities of BR are incorporated into mobile devices (fixed wireless terminals, mobile handsets) through short code dialling option and will replace the existing PABX system.
Initially, 1260 m-Centrex connections including more than 300 remote stations at different locations of Bangladesh, have been provided to BR. GP will gradually extend up to 1,700 connections.
Abul Kalam Azad, secretary of the Ministry of Railway, inaugurated the service at a programme held at the Rail Bhaban recently where Vivek Sood, chief executive officer of Grameenphone, was also present.
Azad expressed gratitude to GP for modernisation and introducing m-Centrex for BR network replacing existing PABX system. ‘BR operation will improve by using this system,’ he added.
Vivek Sood said, ‘Successful implementation of m-Centrex will not only strengthen Bangladesh Railway’s strategic relationship with Grameenphone but also bring efficiency to its communication systems.’
