World Population Day was observed in Barisal on Thursday revealing that the Barisal region advanced towards the national rate of adapting family planning method but behind in
neonatal death rate and providing maternity service.
The participants in the day’s programmes called upon all to play a positive role in raising awareness of early marriage and its impact on reproductive health services.
Considering the existing socio-economic perspectives, they agreed that adolescent pregnancy proved to be the main cause of death of pregnant mothers.
If the present trend of 66 per cent marriage of girls before 18 years continues, yearly average 14.2 million that means daily 39,000 adolescent marriages will be held by 2020, they said.
A discussion meeting and prize distribution among 27 family planning activists at Mother and Child Welfare Centre in the city were followed by a procession to raise awareness of population growth and other related issues.
