World Teachers’ Day will be observed in the country as elsewhere in the world today on the theme ‘take a stand for teachers’.
But police action on the non-government teachers agitating for salary hike clouded the occasion.
Police charged batons and fired tear gas on teachers and employees of non-government educational institutions, who were agitating in the city for better pay under the banner of Non-MPO Shikkha Prathisthan Shikkhak Karmachari Oikya Jote.
At least 50 teachers were injured, 10 of them critically, in the police action. The grievously injured teachers took treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

About 4.8 lakh teachers of non-government schools, colleges, technical institutions and madrassahs are in movement to press for increased house rent and medical allowance.
Different educational and socio-cultural organisations have chalked up programmes, including seminars and discussions, to mark the World Teachers’ Day.
World Teachers’ Day has been observed annually on October 5 since 1994 when it was created by UNESCO.
National Front of Teachers and Employees would mark the day by holding a seminar in Dhaka and other programmes across the country. Bangladesh Adarsha Shikkhak Parishad Federation will hold a discussion at the Dhaka Reporters Unity this morning.
Bangladesh Shikkhak Samity and National Academy for Educational Management will hold separate discussion programmes on the occasion.
World Teachers Day 2012 Celebration Committee will hold a programme at the Dhaka University’s Teacher-Student Centre at 10:00am.
Amar Odhikar Campaign will organise an exchange of views at CIRDAP auditorium.
