The International Cricket Council announced the names of the host nation’s event ambassadors for the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 in a press release on Monday, with less than a month to go before the tournament kicks off in Dhaka on March 16. Captain Mushfiqur Rahim, Sakib al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal and Nasir Hossain were named from the men’s national team, while captain Salma Khatun and Ayesha Rahman will represent the women’s side.
The event ambassadors will make appearances at a series of promotional events, including the ‘Mini World Twenty20 tournament’ from 23 February to 6 March – a part of the School-Contact Programme – and the official trophy tour, in addition to participating in a number of ICC coaching clinics.
‘Cricketers are considered as national heroes in Bangladesh, and that level of popularity reminds us of the need to give something back,’ said Mushfiq of his role as an event ambassador. ‘Through the identity cricket has given us, we can touch lives and make a difference. As an event ambassador, I hope to put a smile on many faces.’
‘Women’s cricket has come a long way in Bangladesh, and this is an opportunity to further promote the game and its values, especially among young girls for whom sports can be a beacon of hope,’ said Salma.
