Recieves 2 honourary degrees
Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus received the highest national award of Peru, “Order of the Sun,” in the grade of “Grand Cross” at a ceremony in Lima on Wednesday in recognition of his innovative efforts in fighting poverty.
President Alan Garcia of Peru put on the Gold Medal and the Grand Ribbon on Yunus at the majestic ceremony in the Ambassadors’ Room of the two-century-old presidential palace Torre Tagle Palace, said a press release.
President paid a glowing tribute to Muhammad Yunus for his innovative work, which benefits thousands of poor women in all over Peru, particularly in its poor Andean Region.
Former Peru president and leader of the opposition party Alejandro Toledo, former president of Guatemala Vinicio Cerezo, ministers and high officials, twenty ambassadors, elites and media personalities attended the function.
Prof Yunus also received two honourary degrees from Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola and from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos.
Yunus is visiting Peru at the invitation of former president Toledo to promote social business in Latin America. During his stay in Lima, he addressed an open-air gathering of 5,000 low-income people in the shantytown on the edge of Lima.
All these awards have been given to Yunus for his innovative and continuous efforts to fight poverty. He was in Lima for a day on September 27.
