Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman bowed out of the Chess World Cup after conceding a 0.5-1.15 point defeat against World No. 11 GM Boris Gelfand of Israel in the first round held in Tromso, Norway on Monday night. Zia, the highest ranked Bangladeshi player drew the second game of the first round against the Israeli but his defeat in the first game meant he was eliminated from the tournament.
Zia played with white pieces in the second match, which ended in a draw after 103 moves. Zia will return home today.
