Satkhira court suspends jail sentence, orders man to teach underprivileged students instead

A Satkhira court has suspended a six-month jail sentence of a man and allowed him to stay with his family on some conditions including teaching underprivileged children free of cost for one year.
Satkhira Senior Judicial Magistrate Yasmin Nahar on Tuesday (March 22, 2022) passed the order after Jahirul Sarder (25) of Assasuni upazila pleaded to the court for his first-time offence and vowed not to commit any crimes in future, according to court sources.
The magistrate first decided to sentence him to six months in jail for threatening a village doctor. But later, she suspended the verdict giving some conditions. The other conditions include refraining from consuming narcotics and getting involved in the anti-narcotics campaign, reading two books on Liberation War and taking care of his parents.
A district probation officer will oversee the matter and submit a report before the court after three months, sources at the court said. Jahirul will be exempted from the charges finally if his activities are found to be satisfactory, according to the sources.
Under the Probation of Offenders Ordinance 1960, when a court thinks that, having regard to the circumstances including the nature of the offence and the character of the offender, it is expedient to do so, the court may instead of sentencing the person at once, make a probation order.
