A youth was killed by the Rapid Action Battalion in a ‘gunfight’ at Kurigram in Narail on early Wednesday.
The deceased, Rashed Parvez, 23, son of Javed Hossain Bulu, of Jangle village in Narail, was found lying near the helipad area after the ‘gunfight’ at about 1:00am.
This is the third incident of killing in such incidents within 24 hours, as two carjacking suspects were killed in Dhaka on early Tuesday.
The latest incident took to 40 the number of the victims of extrajudicial killings in the incidents of ‘crossfire,’ ‘gunfight’ or ‘encounter’ in this year.
At least 396 people have so far fallen victim to extrajudicial killing by law enforcers since January 6, 2009 when the government assumed office with a commitment to end extrajudicial killing.
The battalion’s company commander ABM Jahidul Karim claimed that they raided the helipad where Parvej and his associates were gathering with firearms.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the group members opened fire prompting the battalion men to fire back, claimed Karim.
Following the gunfight, other associates of the group went away and the law enforcers found the body.
The battalion recovered two pistols, a shooter gun and ammunitions.
Karim said that Parvej along with his associates Masud, Rinto and others had kidnapped a 14-year-old boy Hasibul Hasan Tanvir, son of an army sergeant, on June 28 and demanded Tk 5 lakh in ransom.
