An alleged criminal was killed in a ‘shootout’ with Rapid Action Battalion at Khejurbag in South Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital yesterday.
The dead, Minu Parvez alias Tonu alias Dadabhai, 27, was accused in a number of cases, including murder, said police.
South Keraniganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Bashar said a patrol team of Rab-10, while passing through Khejurbag area around 2:30am, found Tona and six to seven of his associates holding a meeting there.
Sensing their presence, the criminals opened fire on the elite force that ensued a ‘gunfight’.
Tona died on the spot while his cohorts managed to flee the scene.
Rab men recovered one shutter gun and three cartridges from the spot.
Rab sources said Tona was second-in-command of Jinnah Chowdhury gang and, in the absence of Jinnah, he was active in Dhanmondi area.
They also said Tona was a close associate of Rana and Nasir alias Bhatali Nasir of Keraniganj.
