Al least 10 people were injured and three activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir were arrested as they clashed with police on Sunday in the capital, Rajshahi and other places.
Shibir activists hurled crude bombs on police during their procession at Mohakhali in the city Sunday morning. They blasted four crude bombs and police arrested two activists from the spot.
The detained were identified as M Mohaimen, 20, a first year student of Titumir College and M Alauddin, a student of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology in Mirpur.
Banani police subinspector Mostak Ahmed said a group of 50 to 60 activists of Shibir brought out procession at Mohakhali Wireless Gate area at 9:45am. They hurled crude bombs targeting police. Police then foiled the procession and nabbed two activists.
In Rajshahi city at least 10 people were injured in a clash between Shibir activists and police. The incident occurred around 11:00am as police arrived in the scene after Shibir men brought out a sudden procession at Shalbagan area.
The activists blasted two crude bombs and threw brickbats as the police arrived, said officer-in-charge Ziaur Rahman Zia of the Boalia Model police station.
Police shot tear shells and rubber bullets to disperse the agitators.
The Shibir activists then vandalised a truck, said witnesses.
The student front of Jamaat-e-Islami called for procession programme across the country on Sunday demanding the release of their president Md Delwar Hossain and other leaders in prison.
Shibir’s secretary general Md Abdul Jobbar announced the agitation programme in a statement on Saturday.
Meanwhile, police arrested a Shibir activist at Kalibari area under Nilphamari district on Sunday morning.
Md Shohag, 20, was arrested on charge of attacking police. Abu Akkas Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Nilphamari sadar police station said that Shohag was arrested for his involvement in attack on police in February’s violence.
