A team from Dhaka South City Corporation evicted around 1,000 hawkers from sidewalks in Gulistan yesterday as it conducted a drive for the second time this week.
Earlier Sunday, DSCC had evicted over 1,000 street vendors, but many of them returned to the sidewalks.
MA Kashem, president of the Bangladesh Hawkers League and Bangladesh Hawkers Federation, said they are calling for the rehabilitation of street vendors before an eviction.
He said a 2016 Ecnec ruling put the responsibility for rehabilitation of street vendors on City Corporation. DSCC made a list of 2,502 street vendors when Sayeed Khokon was DSCC mayor, but they have not rehabilitated any of them yet.
DSCC chief estate officer Moniruzzaman said they conducted the drive to evict all street vendors and remove illegal structures from roads and footpaths in the red zone.
After repeatedly failing to stop street vendors from taking over the capital’s streets, DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh announced the marking of streets in three categories – red, yellow and green.
Red zones are completely taboo for hawkers. However, they can set up their stalls along sidewalks and streets in yellow and green zones on conditions, depending on the time and day of the week.
