Two alleged robber were beaten to death early Wednesday by a mob at Purba Rajasan in Savar, a city suburb.
The Savar police identified one of the deceased as Shahid Chowdhuri, 40, son of Tomij Uddin of Bejorghati village of Munshiganj district, and the other as simply Siddique, 37.
This was the second such incident that happened in the city within five days. In the first incident, five people were beaten to death after being captured by a mob at Matuail.
The police said a gang of eight to 10 robbers entered the house of one Abu Saleh Md Shah Alam in North Rajasan area breaking open the door and looted cash, gold ornaments and other valuables holding the residents of the house at gunpoint.
The robbers assaulted and hurt four of the family members, namely Abu Saleh, his wife Samira, son Shahriar and daughter Shahrina, when they tried to shout for help.
Hearing the hue and cry, locals rushed to the spot and the robbers left the house. Night guards of Deogaon village managed to catch two members of the gang when it reached the village being chased by a lynch mob. The mob beat and stabbed the two robbers indiscriminately, leaving them dead on the spot.
On information, the police recovered the bodies from the spot in the morning and sent those to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Locals and the Savar police alleged that the law and order had deteriorated sharply in recent times in the Savar-Ashulia industrial area.
Two cases were filed with Savar police station in this connection. One is a robbery case lodged by Shah Alam accusing six unnamed persons and the other is an unnatural death case lodged by sub-inspector Aminul Islam of Savar police station accusing a group of unnamed people.
Savar police station officer-in-charge Mahbubur Rahman told New Age villagers killed two robbers and later informed the police.
