Two housewives were killed for dowry in Cox’s Bazar town and Ramu of the district on Thursday.
The victims were identified as Rasheda Akter, 25, daughter of Mohammad Hossain, of South Kolatoli village and Sabera Ali Reha, 22, daughter of Sona Ali of Alirjahan in Cox’s Bazar town.
Cox’s Bazar police said Mohammad Aziz, 27, had married Rasheda Akter in February 2010. Aziz regularly tortured Rasheda, mother of an infant, for dowry since their marriage. At one stage, Aziz claimed Taka 2 lakh from his father-in-law for business but the latter could not pay the money as he was a poor man.
On Thursday afternoon, Aziz beat up his wife mercilessly with a stick and she died after a few hours without treatment.
Ramu police sent the body to Cox’s Bazar sadar hospital morgue for autopsy. Aziz went into hiding after the murder. Police arrested his sister-in-law Taniha Sultana.
A case has been filed with Ramu police in this connection.
In the other incident, Ziaur Rahman of Pahartali in Cox’s Bazar tortured his wife Sabera, mother of two children, to death for dowry on Saturday afternoon and hung the body from a ceiling fan.
Zia demanded dowry from his wife after their marriage. His father-in-law, Sona Ali, paid him some money after constant pressure. But at one point, Zia demanded Taka one lakh for business which his wife could not pay.
An enraged Zia and his mother beat up Sabera on Saturdat afternoon.
They took her to Cox’s Bazar sadar hospital at about 8:30pm claiming that she had attempted suicide.
Aziz and his mother fled from the hospital after the doctors declared her dead.
A case was filed with the Cox’s Bazar police in this connection.
