At least two people were injured critically when a train rammed into a bus at Mohakhali level crossing in the capital on Sunday night, the police said.
No death was reported in the accident as a few passengers were on the bus and all of them jumped out and evacuated before the train hit the 52-seater.Of the injured, Liakat Hossain, 32, was driving the bus while the identity of another could not be known immediately.
Both sustained head injuries and were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after first-aid treatment at
nearby Ayesha Memorial Medical Hospital.
Witnesses and police said that the accident took place at about 10:45pm when the Nabakoli Paribahan bus got stuck up on the level crossing after its engine suddenly stopped.
The driver’s assistant, Sajjad Hossain, who escaped injuries, said that the bus had stopped on the level crossing due to engine failure.
The signalman at the level crossing, meanwhile, lowered the barriers on both sides as the train was approaching the crossing. The terrified passengers of the bus escaped death by jumping out.
The bus driver was trying to start the engine until the train rammed it, leaving him critically injured, said Sajjzad.
The bus was heavily damaged and got stuck with the nearby railway signal-room after being dragged by the engine of the train.
Train service was hampered while traffic on the road remained suspended till early hours on Monday.
The Banani police officer-in-charge Bhuiyan Mahboob Hassan could not name the train involved in the accident.
