The Department of Environment (DoE) in a drive fined two textile mills Tk 36 lakh yesterday for discharging untreated liquid waste into the Buriganga River.
Chandni Textile Mills Ltd and Imam Dyeing, Knitting, Printing and Finishing Industries both situated in Shayampur do not have any effluent treatment plant (ETP), though it is mandatory according to the existing law.
The industries fall under the red category according to the existing Environment Protection Act 2010 and it is a must for them to build ETP.
The industries were set up eight years ago. But they never took any environment clearance certificate from the department, which is also mandatory according to the law.
They have so far discharged nearly 1.17 lakh square metres of untreated liquid waste in the river, according to an estimation of a mobile team of the department.
Earlier, both of the industries were sent notice instructing to take environment clearance certificate and build ETP.
The drive was conducted by Mohammed Munir Chwodhury one of the directors of the DoE.
During the drive the owners of the industries were asked to build the ETP and take environment clearance certificate at the soonest possible time, the press release said.
