Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate in separate drives seized 170 gold bars weighting 20 kilograms and arrested one person at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital within a span of nine hours till Wednesday. The arrested was identified as Sohel Rahman, 38. Sohel is from Sylhet, he returned from United Arab Emirates by a Biman Banglades Airlines flight.
The customs officials recovered 17 kilograms of gold bar from the toilet of a Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft at around 11:30pm on Tuesday night, said Mohammad Wajed Ali, assistant commissioner of customs. “Based on secret information, the customs officials searched the aircraft and found two bags carrying 146 gold bars inside the toilet,” Ali added.
The flight returned from Hong Kong at about 10:45pm Tuesday night, the official said. In another drive on Wednesday morning at around 8:45am, the customs officials arrested Sohel Rahman, 38, along with 24 gold bars weighting three kilograms at the airport.
