Twenty-six cases have been filed against more than 50,000 persons, in connection with the massive violence unleashed by Hefazat-e-Islam activists on Sunday and Monday.
Of them, 16 were filed for the violent activities carried out by Hefazat members during the Islamic organisation’s “Dhaka Siege Programme” on Sunday. Ten of these cases were filed with Paltan Police Station and the rest with Motijheel Police Station.
Ten more cases were filed in Chittagong, Narayanganj and Bagerhat, in connection with the violence that took place on Monday.
Mehedi Hasan, assistant deputy commissioner (ADC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Motijheel Zone), said the police have filed five of the cases, while people affected by the violence lodged the remaining ones. He added that more cases would be filed in this regard.
On May 5, three people were killed in clashes between Hefazat men and law enforcers at different parts of the capital. The Hefazat activists also went on a rampage and torched around 70 vehicles, and ransacked many financial institutions and shops in different areas, including Baitul Mukarram Market.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court on Tuesday placed Hefazat secretary general Junaid Babunagri on a nine-day remand in a case filed over the violence. He was arrested on Monday.
Forty Hefazat-e-Islam activists were also taken on a two-day remand. They were arrested by the Ramna and Shahbagh police, on Sunday, on charges of obstructing law enforcers from discharging their duties, and vandalising and torching vehicles in the city. Later, they were shown arrested under Section 54 of the Bangladesh Penal Code.
A total of 10 cases have been filed against some 18,723 Hefazat men in connection with Monday’s violence in Narayanganj, Chittagong and Bagerhat districts that left 23 people dead.
In Narayanganj, four cases were filed against 1,000 unidentified Hefazat activists for attacking cops, and torching and vandalising vehicles. Three of these cases have been filed by the police, while the owner of a torched bus lodged the other case.
In Chittagong, police filed a case against 5,000 Hefazat men with Hathazari Police Station on Tuesday morning, in connection with the violence.
Sub-inspector Jahangir Arif filed the case against 25 named and 4,975 unnamed Hefajzat men.
Besides, the family of Army sergeant Saidur Rahman, who was killed in the clash, would file a murder case, said the officer-in-charge of Hathazari police.
In Bagerhat, five cases were filed against 12,723 Hefazat activists for attacking cops, killing one policeman, firing, obstructing police from discharging their duties, vandalising three business establishments and attacking an easy-bike driver during a clash with police on Monday.
SI Goutam Haldar filed a case with Fakirhat Police Station on Monday against 99 identified and 12,000 unidentified Hefazat men.
Besides, Rupsha Seafood Cold Storage manager M Arifur Rahman filed a case against five named and 150 unnamed Hefazat members, while Bagerhat Seafood Cold Storage manager Mohammad Forkan Uddin Ahmed lodged another case against five identified and 150 unidentified Hefazat men for ransacking their establishments. Shampa Ice Factory manager Deb Kumar Saha filed a case against five identified and 150 unidentified Hefazat men on the same charges.
Abu Sayed, an easy-bike driver, filed the other case against nine named and 150 unnamed Hefazat men on charges of attacking him and vandalising his bike.
