Mobile talking on rail tracks blamed
Three people including a TV cameraman were crushed under the wheels of a train in Kalihati upazila of the district early yesterday.
The three were standing on railway tracks and talking over the mobile phone when Dhaka-bound Drutojan Express from Rangpur knocked them down, said Helalul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge east police station.
The victims were identified as Aminul Islam, 26, Abdur Rashid Bakul, 25, and Asadul Islam, 30, of Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat district. Bakul was a cameraman of private television channel Somoy TV.
A Dhaka-bound passenger bus from Lalmonirhat broke down at Analiabari around 5:00am due to a fault in the engine.
The passengers got off the bus while the driver was trying to repair it beside the Bangabandhu Bridge approach road. Many passengers including the victims were standing on the railway tracks.
The victims perhaps did not notice the train approaching as they were talking over the mobile phone, the OC said quoting other passengers.
