At least 30 persons, including seven students of Dhaka University, were injured in clashes with the police and ruling party activists on Thursday at Chankharpul area of the city.
The clash took place after activists of Awami League and Sramik League beat up several students of the university. Several vehicles were damaged and a bus was set ablaze during the incident.
Seven DU students and two journalists sustained bullet injuries as the police fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
The injured students are: Sajeeb of the applied statistics department, Sohag of the botany department, Imon of the applied chemistry department, and Rashed, Ifad and Shibly of the zoology department.
Shahbagh Police Station officer-in-charge Sirajul Islam said the clash had erupted when a Railway team, led by a magistrate, went to Ananda Bazar Market at about 11:30 am to put up a signboard on the land of the market as it was grabbed by a local influential person.
A group of people attacked the railway people, in protest of its move to evict the alleged grabber.
As the police tried to resist them, they attacked sub-inspector Iftekhar.
According to witnesses, a student of Ekushey Hall of Dhaka University got hurt during the attack.
On receiving the news, a large number of students came out of the hall and attacked the land grabbers.
Police intervention brought about a triangular clash in the area.
Condemning the incident, DU acting proctor Prof. Amzad Ali said police action against the students was undesirable, and that the police should not have opened fire on the students.
