At least 31 people were killed and 1,253 injured in political violence and nine were killed in ‘crossfire’ by law enforcing agencies in the country in July.
Human rights organisation Odhikar stated it in its monthly human rights monitoring report, released on Thursday. The report said that Border Security Force of India killed three Bangladeshi citizens in July. Of them, one was shot dead and two were tortured to death by the BSF.
Three Bangladeshis were injured, a woman was raped and 12 were abducted by the BSF during the same period, the report said.
Odhikar expressed concern saying that 12 people were allegedly lynched in July.
‘Due to the weak criminal justice system, the tendency of taking the law into one’s own hands is increasing, as people are losing their confidence and faith in the police and the judiciary,’ said the report.
The report stated that despite assurances of the government, extrajudicial killings continued in July and nine people became victim of extrajudicial killings in ‘crossfire’ of whom seven were killed by the Rapid Action Battalion, the rest two by the police.
Odhikar expressed its satisfaction over the government decision to withdraw the cases filed by the Rapid Action Battalion against college student Limon Hossain following an incident in which the battalion men shoot him in the leg causing the amputation of the leg.
In July, at least nine journalists were injured and one was prosecuted, said the report.
The report stated that sexual violence, rape, acid violence on women, dowry related violence also continued unabated during the period.
