At least four people were killed and nearly fifty others injured in the post upazila elections violence by the ruling party activists and supporters in different districts of the country yesterday. They also allegedly ransacked and set fire to the election offices of rival candidates.
The incident of violence took place in Faridpur, Narail, Jessore, Kushtia, Natore ,Brahmanbaria, Jamalpur and Sherpur districts.
In Jessore miscreants killed a BNP activist and injured four others. The dead was identified as Abdul Jabbar, 31, son of Surat Ali of Kashipur village in the sadar.
Sources said the assailants led by an UP member Polash abducted the victim on Friday. Police recovered the dead body from a nearby field yesterday.
They also ransacked Zia Smriti Sangsad at night and injured four supporters of BNP.
In Kushtia a BNP supporter was killed by Awami League supporters at Joardarpara village in Daulatpur upazila of the district yesterday.
The dead was identified as Rezaul, 35, son of Tasim Mandol of the village.
Police and eyewitnesses said some local AL activists attacked the house of Rezaul as he had campaigned for BNP chairman candidate for upazila election. A supporter of the newly-elected Upazila chairman was beaten to death on Friday allegedly by followers of the defeated Upazila candidate Imamul Hossain at the Patpasha village under Gotti Union in Saltha Upazila in Faridpur. The dead was identified as Akkas Matubbar, 50.
Officer in charge of the local police station informed that three more people were also hurt as they went to save Matubr. The injured were admitted to Saltha Upazila Health Complex.
In Narail one person was seriously beaten to death as a group of miscreants numbering ten attacked Idris, 50, with sharp weapons at Banka of Laxmipasha Union on Friday.He was taken to Lohagora health centre and then moved to Khulna Medical College Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries.
In Brahmanbaria supporters belonging to defeated Upazila chairman candidate Abu Asif’s allegedly besieged Ashuganj Upazila Parisad office on Friday afternoon. They demanded cancellation of the polls result.
The two groups locked in clash that left 25 persons injured. Police and RAB tried to thwart them and a clash ensued which left at least 25 men injured.
In Jamalpur supporters of local Sadar Upazila vice-chairman candidate Khalequzzaman Pradip allegedly vandalised and set fire to the election office of rival candidate Ruhul Amin Milon. They also reportedly attacked the firm of a local business leader.
Abdul Matin, Officer in Charge of the concerned police said they visited the venue but no charges were lodged.
In Sherpur the supporters of Awami League-backed defeated candidate Mohammad Ashraf Hossain Khoka staged demonstrations after rejecting the polls result.
They besieged and vandalised the home and office of the Upazila Nirbahi officer, and damaged two trucks and a bus.
Enamul Habib, the concerned Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) confirmed the incident. He said preparations were underway to lodge cases.
In Natore a group of miscreants swooped on a house of Ibrahim Khalil Fatik, chairman of Kamal union parishad and Singra unit general secretary of SD in the on Friday evening. They ransacked the house.
