The interim government has announced plans to shorten the four-year bachelor’s program at the National University to three years, according to Prof M Aminul Islam, special assistant to the education adviser.
At an event today at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka, which celebrated International Education Day, Aminul Islam stated that the four-year bachelor’s course would be condensed into a three-year program. “In the final year, students will receive comprehensive education in technical subjects. Upon completion, they will earn two certificates.”
One certificate will be for the bachelor’s degree, while the other will be a widely recognized diploma. “This way, students can achieve their goal of obtaining a bachelor’s degree while also enhancing their job prospects,” he added.
He mentioned that the new system aims to boost employment opportunities. “This will be a groundbreaking and exceptional decision,” he remarked.
Prof Aminul pointed out the existing stigma surrounding diplomas and technical education, which many view as shameful. “We are planning initiatives in the near future to change this perception.”
He also noted that only 18 percent of the necessary teachers are currently available.
While the curriculum includes both practical and theoretical lessons, there are no laboratories, trainers, or teachers for practical training. As a result, students receive only theoretical instruction, followed by viva exams, and are awarded certificates without any hands-on experience. “This will all be completely overhauled.”
He emphasized the need for proper education, sufficient laboratory facilities, and qualified trainers. “They will be prepared to secure good jobs even while still studying,” he concluded.
Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar, adviser on primary and mass education; Prof Saidur Rahman, a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC); and Kabirul Islam, secretary of the Technical and Madrasah Education Division, were also present at the programme, among others. The event was presided over by Siddique Zobair, secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division.
